Summary: Edward always does something special for Jasper for Halloween; what’s he up to this year?
Disclaimer:
This hasn’t been beta’d or pre-read. Also, I don’t own Twilight.

The Best Halloween Ever

Edward was up to something. He was throwing off vibes of nervousness and excitement that even a non-empath could’ve picked up on. Alice, of course, knew what was going on, but she wasn’t talking. She almost cracked when I offered to replace her Porsche with the latest model, but she saw something that changed her mind and started yelling at me for “almost ruining everything”. Whatever was going on, this was shaping up to be the best Halloween in all my 168 years.

*******

I was never much interested in the supernatural as a human, but that all changed after my change. Once I became a mythological creature myself, I found my curiosity piqued by all things weird and creepy. Alice and Rosalie love Christmas, Esme gets giddy over Valentine’s Day, Emmett lives for the 4th of July, and Easter holds a special place in Carlisle’s heart. But me? My favorite holiday is Halloween. Edward has no preference–he loves them all equally–but knowing how much I love All Hallow’s Eve, he does something special for me every year. One year, it was a haunted house with each room dedicated to a different historical murderer (the murderers being portrayed, of course, by the rest of the family). Another year, the theme was “childhood Halloween”. We took our friend Bella’s twins trick-or-treating, then went on a haunted hayride (that Emmett almost got us kicked off of), and finally back home to watch scary movies. I think my favorite so far was the year he went with a traditional vampire theme. Our house was tricked out like Dracula’s castle, and we all had to wear capes and fangs. The icing on the cake was the collection of truly horrible vampire movies Edward put together (with Emmett’s help). A roomful of vampires laughing themselves silly isn’t something you see every day.

*******

While the fourth floor was being transformed, I was banished to the living room. I tried playing video games with Emmett, watching TV, and reading; anything to shut everyone out. Finally, the swirl of emotions–the aforementioned excitement and nervousness, plus love, lust (lust? WHAT was he up to?), embarrassment, amusement–were too much, and I headed for the woods behind the house. I didn’t really need to hunt, but it would give me something to do. I couldn’t drive myself crazy trying to figure out what Edward and his sidekick were up to if I was in predator mode.

*******

I was just disposing of my second deer when my phone vibrated with the all-clear from Alice. I double-timed it back home, and was surprised to find everyone gone. That was…odd. They were usually gathered around, waiting to see my reaction–when they weren’t actively involved, that is. I didn’t see Edward, either, so I called out his name as I walked through the kitchen to the living room. At this point I didn’t really expect a response, and I didn’t get one. I rounded the last corner and the main staircase came into sight. Lining both sides of the stairs were mini-pumpkins, hollowed out to hold white tea lights. Every flight of stairs and hallway between the living room and the fourth floor were illuminated by the pumpkins. When I reached our door, I pushed it open–and my jaw dropped.

Edward and Alice must’ve bought out every candle shop in the Pacific Northwest, because every flat surface in our room was covered with them. And sprinkled among the black, purple, and silver candles were more mini-pumpkins, these carved into jack o’ lanterns. Some simple, some elaborate, but no two alike. Hundreds of tiny flames flickered and danced, bathing everything in a warm, buttery light.

Mesmerized as I was by my surroundings, it took me a moment to notice Edward. When I did, my breath caught and venom pooled in my mouth. Leaning against our four-poster bed wearing nothing but black silk lounge pants, he looked like temptation personified. The desire was rolling off him in waves, and was potent enough to nearly bring me to my knees.

“I’m really glad I can feel how much you love me, otherwise all this fire would have me real nervous,” I cracked.

He grinned back at me. “No, my love, you have nothing to worry about. I have no intention of turning you into a pile of ashes. Most of them are LED, anyway.”

His face grew serious and he asked, “What do you think?”

Obviously he already knew what I thought about it, but I appreciated that he made the effort to ask me anyway.

“It’s beautiful, darlin’,” I told him. “I can’t imagine how long this must’ve taken, even with Alice’s help.” Edward had told me long ago that unless he absolutely had to, he didn’t use vamp-speed when setting up my surprises. “Getting it done as quickly as possible makes it seem like I want to be done with it–like it’s a chore. Nothing could be farther from the truth, Jazz. I love doing this for you.”

His mouth quirked up on one side. “Probably not as long as you’re thinking–thanks to Alice. She saw right away that we needed to divide and conquer; she drew and I carved.”

“I’ll have to thank her later–this is amazing.”

“I wanted to do something completely different this year. Halloween and romance don’t usually go together, but I wanted to try.” His eyes, black with want, flashed to mine as he read my thoughts. “And you’re just as turned on as I am, aren’t you?”

Before he could say anything else, I was across the room and had him pinned against the bedpost. “You have no idea. I’ve been feeling your lust since this morning, and coupled with my own? Darlin’ it’s driving me mad.”

I cupped his face in my hands and kissed him with abandon. He opened his mouth for me as I slid my hands into his hair and tugged gently. He moaned and brought his hands to my hips, pulling me closer. I felt his erection press against mine, and it was my turn to groan. Desperate for friction, I ground my pelvis into his, thankful once more that we were the same height.

Edward’s hands moved from my hips to my ass to the waistband of my pants. Before I had time to realize what he was doing, he’d ripped my jeans and boxer briefs from my body, and flung them across the room.

With one more hard, searing kiss he dropped to his knees and took me in his mouth.

“Fuck!” I cried out as I hit the back of his throat. Apparently we weren’t going for a slow burn tonight. I moved so I could grasp the posts at the foot of the bed just in time to stop myself from falling to the floor when he tongued my slit.

Teeth, tongue, lips, and long, elegant fingers came into play, bringing me to the edge of orgasm, again and again. Just as I thought I’d lose my mind if I didn’t get some relief, Edward bit down gently on the tip of my cock and pushed one venom-coated finger into my entrance.

I barely had time to call out his name before I came down his throat.

He licked me clean before standing up, eyes blacker than ever.

“On the bed. NOW!” he growled at me.

I climbed on backwards, never taking my eyes off him. His pants went the way of mine, and he followed after me on all fours. I’ve always thought Edward was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, but Edward prowling after me like a mountain lion stalking its prey? Hottest. Thing. Ever.

When my back hit the headboard, Edward grabbed my legs and pulled me flat. He planted his hands on either side of my shoulders, lowered himself onto me, and snarled in my ear, “And just where do you think you’re going?”

“Nowhere,” I spluttered, loving the feeling of his hard, heavy cock rubbing against me.

“Damn straight you’re not,” he told me, right before he nipped at my earlobe.

He continued biting me; my neck, my jaw, my collarbone. Softly at first, then harder when my growls and moans told him I needed more. The sting of his venom only enhanced my ecstasy. His hands on my ass held me in place as he rocked his hips against me, bringing my cock back to life.

Rolling away from me for a moment, he grabbed a bottle of lube from his nightstand drawer. His tongue traced circles around my nipples as he quickly prepared me.

He ordered me onto my hands and knees, and I didn’t hesitate to comply. He rubbed the swollen head of his cock against my entrance before easing his way inside. Once his pelvis was flush against my backside, he leaned over my back to whisper, “I’m gonna fuck you so hard.” That was all the warning I got before he pulled almost all the way out and then slammed back into me.

“Motherfuck!”

“Sofuckinggood!”

Edward drove into me again and again, harder and faster than would’ve been possible for a human. He was done teasing.

A hand in my hair brought me out of my pleasure-induced fog. One tug had me up on my knees, pressed against the front of Edward’s body. His other hand snaked around me and took hold of my length.

“I want you to come with me,” he said, the gentleness of his voice in complete contrast to the actions of his body.

He stroked me in time with his thrusts, and I soon felt my balls tightening. No sooner had I realized I was going to come than Edward was releasing into me. His orgasm triggered my own, and I came, painting the comforter and his hand with my venom.

*******

Many hours and much broken furniture later, we lay on what was left of our bed, my head on Edward’s chest as he gently stroked my hair. There wasn’t an inch of me that he hadn’t worshipped, and I don’t think I’d ever felt happier or more loved.

“That was indescribable, babe. I just…thank you again for such a wonderful Halloween.”

“You’re welcome, my love,” he replied, kissing the top of my head. “Anything for you.”

“There’s just one problem,” I said, trying to bite back my smile.

“Oh, yeah? And what might that be?” he asked, my favorite cocky grin firmly in place.

“How will you ever manage to top this?”

“Don’t you worry your pretty little head about that, darlin’,” he said in a perfect Southern drawl. “I’ll come up with something.”

VampSlash Roundup in SBS 3.0

There were an impressive 48 entries in the Slash Backslash 3.0 Contest, and 7 of those were vampy or wolfy.  That seems low, but it’s a full 15%!  That said, I know all of us here at the VampSlash blog would love to see even more next year. 🙂

This is just a quick listing of all of the Vamp/Wolf slash in SBS 3.0 plus a bit of my thoughts. If you haven’t read these, you’re really missing out.

A Light Exists in Spring by shoefreak37
Pairing: Edward/Mike
Word Count: 9,999
Summary: The Volturi find a new prospect in Forks. “All I know is, I think I’m gay for Edward Cullen, and in two days I’m supposed to die.”
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice winner, Judge’s Choice winner
My thoughts: I admit I’ve never been a huge Mike fan, but this story turned that around. I’m not sure I have words to describe the poetry of this story. Go read vampireisthenewblack’s review. She says it better than I could.

Devil’s Spawns by TwLiGhTeD-sLaSh
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 9,998
Summary: “It’s official,” Carlisle said as realization set in. “Our newborns are the devil’s spawns sent down to torment us…” Human to Vamp slash J/Ed and Em/Jacob.
My thoughts: At this point in my slash-reading “career” one of the best things I can say about a J/E story is that it’s different. This one definitely falls into that category. Toss out your expectations and preconceived notions, because this won’t meet any of them. It’s categorized as “humor” and it fits that as well, though I did find it a bit over the top at times. Be aware that the author takes some serious liberties with canon, and pay attention to the warnings in the author’s note.

First Taste of Forever by bmango
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 8,788
Summary: Jasper escapes Maria’s army and heads north, looking for a change. In Chicago, he meets an unusual vampire who teaches him a different way to life and, by a a twist of fate, to finally feel.
Awards/Mentions: Judges’ Choice finalist
My thoughts: I adore Jasper in this one. His thoughts, his actions, his everything. It’s a fresh Jasper to me, but nothing is out of character. This is a great E/J pairing, unlike many others I’ve read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It Happened at the DriveIn by SqueakyZorro
Pairing: Carlisle/Edward
Word Count: 7,343
Summary: After centuries alone, Carlisle changed Edward, hoping for companionship… and more. How does Edward react to Carlisle’s true desires? Will his fears keep them apart, or can two vampires find happiness together?
My thoughts: I loved that Edward was so canon here, painfully so, with his overthinking and refusing to listen to anyone older and wiser, despite their age and wisdom. And I loved Carlisle’s also canon patience and understanding. The fact that their… er… relations take place at a drive-in movie theater? Yes, please!

Legacy of the Spirit Warrior by ArcadianMaggie
Pairing: Edward/Jacob
Word Count: 9,900
Summary: The night of the newborn attack, Jacob uses his shapeshifting ability to protect the ones he loves, changing their fates forever. Contains mpreg. See warnings.
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice finalist, Judges’ Choice finalist
My thoughts: Don’t let the mpreg scare you away, this story is absolutely gorgeous. Jacob’s love for Edward is palpable, and the story is more about his love than the pregnancy. Spirit Warrior hits the main points of all four of the Saga books but in a completely new and different, but oddly-believable, way. Incredibly well-written.

Teach Me by EdwardsMate4Ever
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 4,248
Summary: Edward is a 90 year old virgin whose human girlfriend wants him to make love to her. He is overcome with performance anxiety – can Jasper help ease his fears?
My thoughts: Pretty classic Edward/Jasper could-almost-be-canon vampslash. Good use of Jasper’s gift to heighten and affect Edward’s experience. I just wish we could’ve gotten a bottom!Jasper.

Walking Away by PolkaDotMama
Pairing: E/?
Word Count: 9,938
Summary: A chance encounter pierces Edward, opening him to new knowledge about himself. He walks away, searching for comfort and a way to fill the void he feels. Will he find his way back to the only person who can truly fulfill him?
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice finalist
My thoughts: Another beautiful entry. I don’t want to spoil the pairing, but I’ll just say that it was perfect and natural. Edward’s growth in this story is tremendous, and I found myself actually respecting him, which is not something I normally think when reading fic. I really enjoyed this one.

Review: Amid the Lucid Stream by ArcadianMaggie

Amid the Lucid Stream by ArcadianMaggie

Summary: The wolves don’t bother the solitary vampire who sits on the cliff’s edge, night after night, looking at the stars. Edward/Jasper, AU, Slash. Rated M.

I’m ridiculously excited that the other girls let me do this review. One of the last entries in the contest, and also one of my very favourites, Amid the Lucid Stream ticked all the right boxes for me. I’ll be very shocked if any of the readers of this review haven’t read Amid the Lucid Stream, but I offer my thoughts on it anyway (and of course the review is part of ArcadianMaggie’s prize for coming second overall in the VampSlash Contest).

Amid the Lucid Stream is a beautiful story. Heartbreaking, tragic, yes, but gorgeous. There seems to be a little bit of madness there in Edward’s thoughts and experiences, until as the story unfolds we begin to understand what has happened.

Edward seems to be isolating himself. Alice hasn’t come out of her room in weeks. Carlisle offers to listen, but Edward doesn’t want to talk. And it appears that he can barely stand to be around Bella. He spends days, it seems, on the cliffs looking up at the stars.

Looking at the pairing, it’s not long before you notice that there is one person missing and wonder why. We’re kept somewhat in the dark, not knowing what happened until near the end, but we know it’s significant. I like that. The author assumes we can think for ourselves and she doesn’t coddle us. The entire story is written with brevity and an economy of words that makes this word count snark jump for joy 😉 ArcadianMaggie does it so well that she has room within this very full story (and the intentionally restrictive word count limit) for something a little extra.

I must admit that when things get a little intellectual I often glaze over (I refer to myself as ‘woefully uneducated’). ArcadianMaggie wove astronomy and myth into this story in such a way that I was still interested. She made it part of the story, linked it to the characters; she made it relevant.

I love how ArcadianMaggie dealt with Bella in this story. Using their youth and inexperience, the way she represents Edward and Bella’s relationship seems very logical and could be completely canon. She makes the Edward/Jasper pairing not only plausible, but obvious. I’ve often wondered why Jasper is so often paired with Edward. It was never obvious to me, never ‘hinted’ at in canon (or perhaps I was simply blinded by the far more obvious Edward/Carlisle pairing), but this is one of those stories that shows that despite their very different beginnings, Edward and Jasper do have rather a lot in common.

Amid the Lucid Stream is a close-to-canon story that doesn’t quite stick to all that happened during Breaking Dawn (I would call it a Breaking Dawn AU), and we see a very different outcome of Bella and Charlie’s first meeting after Bella was changed.

They were on the front porch, laughing as Bella recounted pictures Renesmee had put in her head. Jasper was leaning against the railing, a bemused smile on his face. The sound of a truck could be heard from the distance, growing louder as it came up the drive. Edward should have been listening, should have been paying attention, but he just assumed it was Jacob. Again.

Charlie’s scent reached them at the same time. Impatient with the vague information he had been given, he had come to insist on some answers.

Edward was slow to react, not yet processing the full situation. But not so Jasper, who had spent years among newborns and knew their deadly strength and speed.

It was only fractions of a second, their movements a blur, but when Bella lunged for her father’s throat, Jasper used every last ounce of strength he possessed to throw himself between Bella and Charlie.

Amid the Lucid Stream was also voted Readers Choice. Check out the other winners in The VampSlash Contest and read all the entries here.

Irrelevant Aside: One scene in Amid the Lucid Stream brought to mind an experiment supposedly conducted by Antoine Lavoisier at his own execution during the French Revolution. I find this kind of thing (link contains possible spoiler—and potential ickyness) utterly fascinating, perhaps I’m a little morbid, but I love that it appeared here in this story.

Review: Beautiful, Broken by theladyingrey42

Beautiful, Broken by theladyingrey42

Summary: I come here seeking rusted metal and a particular sort of ruin, captured in art and dissonant drums. Instead I find his face and a kind of beauty I have never, ever known. AU/AH, ExJ slash

theladyingrey42 writes both het and slash, but very little vampfic, and yet she writes such wonderful stories that even if you, like me, rarely read AH contemporary twific, it doesn’t matter. Beautiful, Broken is one of a few all-human slash stories she’s written, and it has a point of difference that makes it stand above so much other AH contemporary fic.

It’s the kind of story that makes you forget you’re reading fanfiction. Jasper and Edward are vastly different from the characters we know, and they find each other in Germany. Jasper is telling the story, and he’s been broken, physically and emotionally. He’s distanced himself from his family as if he believes he doesn’t deserve to be loved. He makes frequent reference to the fact that he is not ‘whole’.

And then he meets Edward, who says he loves ‘beautiful, broken things’.

He is a picture of German nihilism and American beauty, destruction and blackness and something blooming beneath the ruin. Illuminated by the pulsing glow of an amber spotlight, it’s impossible to tell the color of his hair, scattered all around him in intentional dishevelment. Ringed in deepest black against smooth, pale skin, his eyes, too, are a mystery, the make-up lending feminine ambiguity to something that is clearly all maleness and sharp edges in a perfectly congruent incongruity.

This is one of my favourite Edward’s. He is an eyeliner-wearing, pierced artist, so unlike the uptight creature of canon that he may as well be an original character, as is the Jasper of this story, and while often this is my bugbear with contemporary AH fic, in this case it is part of the reason I adore it.

Beautiful, Broken is a one shot of less than 8000 words, but so much is told without telling. Tiny hints that give all the back story you need and nothing you don’t. The words are beautiful, lyrical, and wonderfully describe the decay and destruction that Jasper sees around him and the way he sees himself. The sex scenes are beautifully hot, yet more than just sex. The ending is resolved really well, wrapped up nicely and realistically without drawing things out.

One of the things I like most about theladyingrey42’s writing, is that she doesn’t seem to feel the need to over explain. She assumes that we can think for ourselves, and I think this is one of the highest compliments an author can pay to her readers.
