VampSlash Roundup in SBS 3.0

There were an impressive 48 entries in the Slash Backslash 3.0 Contest, and 7 of those were vampy or wolfy.  That seems low, but it’s a full 15%!  That said, I know all of us here at the VampSlash blog would love to see even more next year. 🙂

This is just a quick listing of all of the Vamp/Wolf slash in SBS 3.0 plus a bit of my thoughts. If you haven’t read these, you’re really missing out.

A Light Exists in Spring by shoefreak37
Pairing: Edward/Mike
Word Count: 9,999
Summary: The Volturi find a new prospect in Forks. “All I know is, I think I’m gay for Edward Cullen, and in two days I’m supposed to die.”
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice winner, Judge’s Choice winner
My thoughts: I admit I’ve never been a huge Mike fan, but this story turned that around. I’m not sure I have words to describe the poetry of this story. Go read vampireisthenewblack’s review. She says it better than I could.

Devil’s Spawns by TwLiGhTeD-sLaSh
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 9,998
Summary: “It’s official,” Carlisle said as realization set in. “Our newborns are the devil’s spawns sent down to torment us…” Human to Vamp slash J/Ed and Em/Jacob.
My thoughts: At this point in my slash-reading “career” one of the best things I can say about a J/E story is that it’s different. This one definitely falls into that category. Toss out your expectations and preconceived notions, because this won’t meet any of them. It’s categorized as “humor” and it fits that as well, though I did find it a bit over the top at times. Be aware that the author takes some serious liberties with canon, and pay attention to the warnings in the author’s note.

First Taste of Forever by bmango
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 8,788
Summary: Jasper escapes Maria’s army and heads north, looking for a change. In Chicago, he meets an unusual vampire who teaches him a different way to life and, by a a twist of fate, to finally feel.
Awards/Mentions: Judges’ Choice finalist
My thoughts: I adore Jasper in this one. His thoughts, his actions, his everything. It’s a fresh Jasper to me, but nothing is out of character. This is a great E/J pairing, unlike many others I’ve read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It Happened at the DriveIn by SqueakyZorro
Pairing: Carlisle/Edward
Word Count: 7,343
Summary: After centuries alone, Carlisle changed Edward, hoping for companionship… and more. How does Edward react to Carlisle’s true desires? Will his fears keep them apart, or can two vampires find happiness together?
My thoughts: I loved that Edward was so canon here, painfully so, with his overthinking and refusing to listen to anyone older and wiser, despite their age and wisdom. And I loved Carlisle’s also canon patience and understanding. The fact that their… er… relations take place at a drive-in movie theater? Yes, please!

Legacy of the Spirit Warrior by ArcadianMaggie
Pairing: Edward/Jacob
Word Count: 9,900
Summary: The night of the newborn attack, Jacob uses his shapeshifting ability to protect the ones he loves, changing their fates forever. Contains mpreg. See warnings.
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice finalist, Judges’ Choice finalist
My thoughts: Don’t let the mpreg scare you away, this story is absolutely gorgeous. Jacob’s love for Edward is palpable, and the story is more about his love than the pregnancy. Spirit Warrior hits the main points of all four of the Saga books but in a completely new and different, but oddly-believable, way. Incredibly well-written.

Teach Me by EdwardsMate4Ever
Pairing: Jasper/Edward
Word Count: 4,248
Summary: Edward is a 90 year old virgin whose human girlfriend wants him to make love to her. He is overcome with performance anxiety – can Jasper help ease his fears?
My thoughts: Pretty classic Edward/Jasper could-almost-be-canon vampslash. Good use of Jasper’s gift to heighten and affect Edward’s experience. I just wish we could’ve gotten a bottom!Jasper.

Walking Away by PolkaDotMama
Pairing: E/?
Word Count: 9,938
Summary: A chance encounter pierces Edward, opening him to new knowledge about himself. He walks away, searching for comfort and a way to fill the void he feels. Will he find his way back to the only person who can truly fulfill him?
Awards/Mentions: Reader’s Choice finalist
My thoughts: Another beautiful entry. I don’t want to spoil the pairing, but I’ll just say that it was perfect and natural. Edward’s growth in this story is tremendous, and I found myself actually respecting him, which is not something I normally think when reading fic. I really enjoyed this one.

Review: A Light Exists in Spring by shoefreak37

A Light Exists in Spring by shoefreak37

Summary: The Volturi find a new prospect in Forks. “All I know is, I think I’m gay for Edward Cullen, and in two days I’m supposed to die.” Slash Backslash 3.0 entry. Post Breaking Dawn.

Are there pairings rarer than Mike/Edward? Not many, if any (kiwi joke). So when this SBS3.0 entry appeared in my box, I squeed, loud and for real. VampSlash! Mike/Edward! Volturi! All my wildest dreams have come true! And I’m exhibiting a blatant author bias here, but I knew that because it had been written by shoefreak37, it would be right up my personal alley (and doesn’t that just sound filthy, no?)

Anyway. shoe. Mike. Edward. Volturi… vamp is a happy girl.

The story is post-BD, and as far as I’m concerned, entirely permissible as canon. Ahh, I do love a canon slash fic. The curtain rises on Edward as he descends into the depths of the Volturi dungeons, flanked by Felix and Demetri. Mike Newton is being held as their prisoner.

What on earth could the Volturi possibly want with Mike Newton?

The people who took him thought it was odd when Mike asked for a notebook and a pen. Once he got over the shock of being kidnapped, he grew bored. So bored he began to be afraid. Mike feared he would never be free again, feared he would forget who he had been entirely. He begins each page like this:

I am Mike Newton. I sometimes wish I were taller so I could slam dunk a basketball. My hair is blond. My birthday is in _ days. I will live to turn twenty.

In A Light Exists in Spring, shoefreak37 creates an addition to the Twilight mythology that fits seamlessly, and intrigued me right from the first mention. It’s impossible to share further without being a Spoily McSpoilpants, so I won’t, but I will say that the gift shoe gives Mike—and the reason the Volturi want him—is so entirely perfect for his character that I am once again rendered almost speechless by her insight into her characters.

Almost 😉

Now, this is a slash fic of course, and shoe doesn’t disappoint on the action. For 21 days, Edward and Mike are locked in a cell together. Oh my god but isn’t that one of my all time fantasies 😉 With no one else to talk to, these boys get to know each other very well. Mike comes to realise that Edward isn’t as bad as he once thought…in fact, he might actually be quite fond of him.

And Edward…

Edward is amazed by Mike. He wonders why Bella clung to Jacob when he left her, when she could have enjoyed the company Edward is enjoying. Here is Mike, days from death or an eternity of servitude, and he strives to keep Edward entertained. Would she have even missed Edward, had she really gotten to know Mike?

Edward has a couple of unique advantages. He can read Mike’s mind. He has also seen the visions Alice had before he left Forks. He knows what’s going to happen between them. And happen it does. shoe’s sex is lovely, as ever. It did remind me of my all time favourite VampSlash, Tracking Redemption, by the same author. The couples are entirely different, in completely different situations, but the language she uses is wonderful. She makes angry sex beautiful, and then when angry sex becomes tender and sweet it transitions nicely. She’s not gratuitous about sex, either. The story comes first and foremost, which I honestly cannot say for yours truly 😉

My name is Mike Newton. There are only two more days until my twentieth birthday.

For the last six days, I have spent most of my time having sex with Edward. I’m pretty confused about that.

The truth is, I have no idea what to think, can’t even begin to think about what to think. Was I into guys before? I don’t know.

All I know is, I think I’m gay for Edward Cullen, and in two days I’m supposed to die.

Mike draws a picture of a wooden stake going into a cartoon heart.

I might love him a little.

A Light Exists in Spring lived up to everything I have come to expect from one of shoefreak37’s VampSlash fics. It’s a wonderful addition to the unusual Mike/Edward pairing.

ETA: A Light Exists in Spring took out the two top spots in SBS3.0, First Place Judges Choice and Winner of the Public Vote. I wrote this review well before the winners were announced and I had no idea a vampfic and a Mike fic would do so well in this usually AH heavy contest. I’m so pleased, I’m so pleased for shoe, congrats love, you completely and utterly deserve it!

Review: Windows by shoefreak37

Windows, by shoefreak37

Summary: I put my hands against the spots, understanding the dark masses were what kept Rosalie alive. They might as well have spelled out ‘The End’ because that was how I felt—not just a chapter was ending, but my story was done. It began and ended with her.

I’d like to be able to say that I’m sort of an advocate for femmeslash in the fandom, but truthfully, I fail at it. I try, but it really isn’t easy to find the kind of story in this genre that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you all warm and squirmy at the same time. They certainly are few and far between, so I find myself shying away from them more and more lately.

Regardless of my scepticism, I was excited to see some femme come in with this contest, and thrilled that one was actually able to capture me the way that it did.

I love it when stories of friendship bloom into something more, but the way shoefreak brings us into the past without the burden of a huge backstory was fantastic. We only get small hints of the childhood Rosalie and Bella shared, but the way this writer weaves her words, there’s more than enough to draw you in, making you feel almost as if you’re there with them.

She was like skinned knees and grass stains, part of my childhood. Unforgettable, she was, like the first breath of Autumn sneaking in on a summer breeze. Like markers that smelled of fruit, a glue stick colored purple, she was different and she stuck out to everyone…

In so few words, we travel down a road with these characters, watching as they experience true friendship, comfort, exploration, a first kiss…but just as they’re discovering what lies beneath the surface for both of them, all of it is snatched away. Shoe managed to hold on to some of the canon aspects of Rosalie’s would-be death, making this story all the more heart-wrenching.

Bella has never known life without Rosalie, and none of the small details included here fail to convey that loss to the readers.

Glancing at the pictures—high school graduation, packing for college, my first apartment—I can’t help but see the empty spot Rosalie should have inhabited. Each photo features me huddled to the side, leaving a gaping space that has no hope of being filled.

Such beautiful descriptive throughout this story, something I’ve come to expect from this writer. What I didn’t expect, though, was her incredible knack for creating a piece that’s both full of beautiful, undying love, and laced with gruesome gore at the same time. Not a feat easily accomplished by many, in my opinion.

I can’t say much without giving away the entire ending, but I will definitely say that this is very much worth the read. Beautifully written, perfectly paced, different in an unexpected way.

Windows won both best femmeslash, and third place judges vote in the vampslash contest. Be sure to check out the wide array of equally beautiful stories by shoefreak37. She’s certainly got something for everyone.

And the Winners Are . . .

The VampSlash Contest – Results

This has been an eventful journey, hasn’t it? Announcements were scheduled for 15th of June, but of course fanfiction.net and it’s latest fail put a spanner in those works. But after relocating the Readers Choice voting poll we were back up and running, and here we are today with some bloody results!

(Please forgive me for the length of time it’s taken to get this sorted. Sickness + real life + a couple of deadlines had to take precedence, I’m afraid.)

I think we’ve all waited long enough, yeah?

Hosts Choice

Decided by fickle whim, and awarded a banner and eternal bragging rights, the Hosts Choice winners are:

  Vision by mamdi
Chosen by vampireisthenewblack for it’s entire lack of backstory and just a little bit of CrazyWard.

All that’s best of dark and bright by rhythm junkie
Chosen by venis-envy because she hates love, and, apparently, rhythm junkie does too.

  In Between by avioleta
Chosen by sapphirescribe because it made Edward’s ‘rebellious years’ meaningful and relevant on a larger scale and, natch, because he’s meant to be with Carlisle.
(We’ll have to get back to mynameisserendipity for her quote. She’s sleeping right now.)

Readers Choice

Decided by public vote, and awarded a banner and eternal bragging rights, the Readers Choice winner is:

Amid the Lucid Stream by ArcadianMaggie

Best Canon

Awarded a banner, eternal bragging rights, and a review on the VampSlash blog, the Best Canon winner is:

  Fire and Ice by HoochieMomma

Best Femmeslash

Awarded a banner, eternal bragging rights, and a review on the VampSlash blog, the Best Femmeslash winner is:

  Windows by shoefreak37

Second Place

Decided by Judge’s impartial scoring, and awarded a banner, eternal bragging rights, and a review on the VampSlash blog, the Second Place winner is:

Amid the Lucid Stream by ArcadianMaggie

And finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for (if you were patient and didn’t just scroll straight down!), the overall winner and the fic that takes…

First Place in the VampSlash Contest

Decided by Judge’s impartial scoring, and awarded a banner, eternal bragging rights, and a review on the VampSlash blog, the First Place winner is:

 In Between by avioleta

Congratulations to all the winners, and indeed, to all the entrants, especially those who were writing vampslash for the very first time. Thank you so much for entering and well done, all of you.

Thank you to our fantastic array of judges, and thank you to the readers and everyone who retweeted and blogged and pimped and voted (and voted again in some cases due to #FFnFail).

Finally, thank GOD for my fellow hosts. So many times I was on the point of flail (not an uncommon state for the vamp), and you came to my rescue. Couldn’t have done it without you!

Review: Tracking Redemption by shoefreak37

Tracking Redemption by shoefreak37

Summary: When Edward flees to Volterra after learning of Bella’s death, he is coerced into remaining as a member of the Volturi Guard. Redemption can be found even when it is not being sought after. Slash/New Moon AU

For our first post-launch review, I chose the first fic I reach for when someone asks me for a vampslash rec. With perfect glee I sat down to re-read Tracking Redemption by shoefreak37. I very very very rarely re-read fanfic. Consequently, I thought I might have to push myself to pick it up. This was only the second time I’ve read this story, and yet once again, I couldn’t put it down.

The story begins in New Moon, but Edward is running to Volterra earlier than in canon. Alice has seen Bella in the meadow with Laurent, and then she disappears from Alice’s visions. With Bella dead, Edward runs off to commit Volturicide.

This time, no one follows him. This time, Aro succeeds in acquiring Edward as a member of the guard. His first assignment is a simple one, more or less. His second, not so much.

He began scouring the hardened nails with ferocity as though trying to purge himself of the self-loathing he was experiencing. If only he could get his hands clean, then he would be free of what he’d done. He could forget it.

Edward cleansed and rubbed and polished and buffed his fingernails, but the stains would not come clean. He added more force and the brush crumbled in his hand. He grabbed another one and began scrubbing again in desperation, and, once again, the tiny plastic tool could not withstand Edward’s panicked grip.

Shoefreak37 ‘humanises’ (so to speak) many of the Volturi, making them real people with depths beyond what we might think of as ‘evil’. Edward finds a few friends within the guard, and Demetri is there from the beginning. Slowly Edward comes to realise that perhaps he wasn’t attracted to Bella in the way he thought he was, and yet he continues to feel tremendous guilt over her death.

“I know that the pieces of your heart are scattered. You feel that you will never find them all again, but, trust me, I am very good at finding things. I already know the shape they are to go back in,” Demetri stated, clutching Edward’s left pectoral tightly. “I can feel how good your heart is Edward, even in its absence.”

Edward let his breath out in a rush, and sobbed once more quietly. “How can you stand to be near me? I can barely tolerate myself.”

“Edward, I have not been moved by another in well over five hundred years. How could I not want to be near you?”

I’m sitting here trying to find words to express how I feel about Edward and Demetri. I can’t. I get stupid-happy all over again. I have a different Demetri in my head from the one in the books (and definitely the movie). He’s patient and understanding. Gentle and self-sacrificing. I’m trying very hard not to *swoon* while I’m supposed to be helpful and factual and shit 😉

Edward is innocent and very pure at the beginning of the story. His thoughts are very proper. This character definitely grows and changes in the course of the story. The sex scenes in Tracking Redemption are very very hot (OMG mountain sex), but the first time Edward says something I wasn’t expecting, it almost killed me dead. More than that superficial change, Edward eventually comes to accept himself, to accept what he is, his immortality. This I found to be a very strong theme within the story, and is part of what makes it a perfect example of alternate universe vampfic.

Tracking Redemption is compelling, surprising, and concise. It’s a hair over 100k, but it doesn’t feel like a rambling epic. Every sentence adds to the story and advances the plot. I’ve heard Shoe refer to her prose as ‘purple’. It’s not, in my opinion. If there is a smattering of turgid members, it’s completely appropriate to Edward’s point of view. Shoe writes in third person, but she does it exceptionally, never once dropping out of Edward’s head and into someone else’s.

The strongest impression I come away with every time I read Tracking Redemption, is that it doesn’t read like serialised fiction. There are no loose ends. No obvious ‘corners’ the author has written herself into which she must then waste an entire chapter digging her way out of (don’t look at me like that, I have a WIP in which I’ve done that exact thing). The first time I read it, I could not believe that shoefreak37 hadn’t written the entire story before she posted a word. It just seemed that cohesive.

I was beyond impressed.

Tracking Redemption has an outtake, Hide and Seek, and a futuretake, Cadence of Humanity.

There is also a companion story: Til Death Do Us Part by GracieBlack28, which is a Jacob/Bella story set in the same universe. I haven’t read this, so I offer the link for FYI purposes. The author seems to have a few other stories set in this universe, focusing on the wolfpack, Embry and his parentage specifically.
